Project Michelle- Donor Registration (6/20/2008)
Michelle is 26 years old.
She has Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). She was diagnosed in February 2007 and is currently undergoing chemotherapy. A marrow/stem cell transplant is a treatment for Leukemia and Michelle and others like her need to find a donor for a transplant
You can help.
You can help save the life of Michelle or someone like her who is searching for a donor. Register to be a potential marrow/stem cell donor by filling out a form and swabbing your cheek. If you are selected as a potential match for a patient, additional testing will be asked of you. Doctors will plan to collect stem cells either from your marrow OR will plan to do an aphaeresis procedure to collect stem cells from your circulating blood.
Ethnicity is a key factor
There is a severe shortage of people from diverse backgrounds (Asian and Pacific Islander, Hispanic and Chicano, African American, Native American, and Multi-racial individuals). Michelle is of Chinese/ Vietnamese and Thai descent and will most likely find a donor of Asian descent.
YOU could be a match for her or someone else like her.
KAPS encourages its members to register to be a donor (to register, bring the contact info of 2 people not living with you or each other)
