About the speaker:
Jin Kyu (Suh) Robertson has a wonderful life success story inspires and motivates practically anybody who hears it. Jin was born and raised in Korea. She worked as a factory girl, waitress, and a housemaid. At age 22, she immigrated to America to become a housemaid (a position she found through a Korean newspaper ad) with practically no English and had only one-way ticket and $100 to her name. At the age of 28, Jin, a battered wife and a mother of eight months old baby-girl, joined the U.S. Army as a private to escape from the domestic violence. Through determination, imagination, and sheer will, later she retired as a U.S. Army major, received MA (at the age of 43) and Ph.D. (at the age of 57) both from Harvard.

Jin has developed what she calls the Warrior Mindset. In this presentation, she will share with attendees how to:

* Be the leader of their own lives
* Strategically utilize creativity, revolutionary ideas, and vision
* Give life to their dreams

Please join KAPS for this very special event but make you RSVP soon because space is limited. If you would like more information, please contact KAPS President Hana Kim at hana@kaps.org

AKASF Event: Special Documentary Screening and Panel Discussion About Korean Adoption

The Association of Korean Adoptees San Francisco (AKASF) presents Resilience, a documentary film that takes a unique look at international adoption from the perspective of a Korean birth mother and her American son. The film follows the remarkable journey of Myung-ja, as she reconnects with her son after 30 years apart. From their initial reunion on Korean television to subsequent meetings and departures, they attempt to build a relationship amidst family betrayal and the legacy of adoption. But with so many obstacles – language, culture, distance, and unspoken loss – can two strangers find a way to become mother and son?
.
Film director Tammy Chu, a Korean American adoptee, was inspired to make this film after reuniting with her birth family to shed light on the untold stories of international adoption. Chu’s perspective as both a reunited adoptee and filmmaker is unique. As an “insider” who can relate directly to the experiences of both the adoptee and birth mother, she captures on film the nuances of these experiences. For more information about Resilience, visit www.resiliencefilm.com.
.
Resilience will be shown in two community outreach events with Director Tammy Chu. The first is on Thursday, July 8, at the Sundance Kabuki Cinemas in San Francisco. The film will begin at 7 p.m., followed by a reception afterward. The second will include the film and an adoption panel discussion on Saturday, July 10, at 1:30 p.m. at Head-Royce School in Oakland, followed by a reception at the Silver Dragon Restaurant.
.
Saturday's Adoption Panel at 3:30 p.m. will be moderated by Deann Borshay Liem, a Korean adoptee and documentary filmmaker (In the Matter of Cha Jung Hee, First Person Plural). Panelists include: Tammy Chu, Korean adoptee and filmmaker (Resilience, Searching for Go-hyang); Debra Baker, birth mother and filmmaker (Lost and Found, Broken Ties); and Beth Hall, adoptive parent and co-founder of Pact, An Adoption Alliance.
.
Sponsors include the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in San Francisco; Pact, An Adoption Alliance; Head-Royce School; Thomas Park Clement; and Busy Worker Bee. Community partners include Center for Asian American Media (CAAM); Concerned United Birthparents (CUB); Cvent; Korean Cultural Center - East Bay (KCCEB); Oakland Asian Cultural Center (OACC); San Francisco Film Society (SFFS); Silver Dragon Restaurant; and Sundance Cinemas.
