KCI Event: North Korea - Human Face Lecture Series - Health Diplomacy in North Korea

The Korean Center, Inc. (KCI) is proud to present the next installment of its special lecture series entitled North Korea: Human Face. A group of KAPS members will be attending this lecture on Wednesday, May 19th at 6:00 pm at the Korean Center (1362 Post St, San Francisco). There will also be a reception with refreshments at 7:00 pm.

Global health diplomacy: This lecture is framed around the critical issue of “health diplomacy” as a way to engage North Korea, and comprises Part II of the Global Health Diplomacy subseries of the “North Korea: Human Face” program. An emerging field of global policy, international health diplomacy is a cutting-edge field that interfaces between foreign policy, public health, and law and economics.

Dr. Sharon Perry is a senior research scientist from the Division of Infectious Diseases, School of Medicine, Stanford University, and science fellow with the Stanford Freeman-Spogli Institute, Center for International Security & Cooperation. Sharon Perry and her team were recently featured in the New York Times for their cutting-edge humanitarian work in North Korea. In an unprecedented collaboration between U.S. and North Korean tuberculosis experts, Perry has been leading a team of U.S. medical specialists working with doctors from Pyongyang’s Ministry of Public Health to develop the country’s first diagnostic laboratory for drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB).

Dr. Perry’s medical research has focused on the immuno-epidemiology of tuberculosis, for which she is a recipient of an NIH K23 career development award. During 2008, in collaboration with CISAC and APARC, she organized the Bay Area Tuberculosis Consortium to host a delegation of North Korean physicians to visit Bay Area TB programs and discuss opportunities for mutual cooperation. She holds a BA, mcl, in History and Economics from Boston University, and an EdM in Social Policy from Harvard University, and completed her PhD in Epidemiology at UCSD.

The Stanford-led Bay Area Tuberculosis Consortium was organized in 2007 to promote opportunities for professional collaboration with North Korea on mutual interests in TB control. For the past two years, Dr. Sharon Perry has directed the DPRK TB Health Policy Project, which seeks to develop opportunities for academic exchange on tuberculosis control. Dr. Perry will discuss the consortium’s work with the DPRK Ministry of Public Health to develop the country’s first laboratory with capacity to diagnose tuberculosis by culture and drug susceptibility testing. Implications of the project for regional and Pacific Rim TB programs will also be discussed.

Please join the Korean Center's Facebook page! http://www.facebook.com/pages/Korean-Center-Inc-KCI-in-San-Francisco/110...

Anyone interested in attending with KAPS should RSVP to KAPS Vice-President Andrew Ko at andrew@kaps.org.

KABANC's Legal Clinic 2010

KABANC's annual legal clinic is coming up on May 22, 2010, so please mark your calendars. This is a pro bono project that reaches out to the Korean-American community. The legal clinic over the years have served hundreds of KAs from all over the Bay Area, and we even had people coming from as far as Salinas to receive a consultation.

Attorneys and law students from all practice areas will make themselves available to provide consultations and answer questions. What we have found is that the questions that many people have are actually "basic" for most of us attorneys, sometimes not even "legal" in nature. However, for many KAs, it's very daunting and confusing because of language and access issues. One of our main objectives is to dispel individuals of those impediments that prevent them from seeking out answers by providing Korean interpreters as well as fostering a more familiar environment.

The event details are as follows:

KABANC Legal Clinic
Date: May 22, 2010, Saturday
Time: 9am to 2pm
Place: The Lord's Church (2526 Homestead Rd. Santa Clara, CA 95051)

TO SIGN UP AS A VOLUNTEER, PLEASE CONTACT HANESTHER KIM AT kim.hanesther@gmail.com

From your KABANC Pro Bono/Community Outreach Committee, Chaired by Jonathan Bae and Co-Chaired by Hanesther Kim and Harrison Nam.
