May Kappy Hour

Come join us for the May installment of our monthly Kappy Hour! This is one day after Cinco de Mayo, so get ready to celebrate Korean-style. We have the lounge in the area reserved exclusively for you, your friends, and the rest of KAPS.

Where: Lava Lounge (527 Bryant St, between 3rd St and 4th St, San Francisco, CA 94107)
When: Thursday, May 6th, 2010, 7:30PM (first Thursday of every month)
Website: www.lavasf.com

Each of our Kappy Hours offer a great opportunity to network with fellow Korean-American professionals, meet up with old friends, and learn about what's going on in KAPS.

As a special treat, we will be joined by our friends at the Asian American Donor Program. AADP is a non-profit community organization dedicated to saving the lives of people with leukemia, lymphoma and other blood diseases curable by stem cell transplants. To achieve this mission, AADP conducts outreach, raises awareness, and registers people to be potential bone marrow/stem cell donors, which you can do at the Kappy Hour.

Because finding a matching donor is often based on ethnicity, and individuals of multi-ethnic descent (Asian, Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latino, African American, and Mixed Race) are not well-represented in the donor registry, too many minority patients fail to find donors for a potentially life-saving transplant. By increasing the chances of finding a donor match, AADP hopes to give more patients a chance at beating their disease.

So come help save a life and have a great time KAPS-style. We have some very exciting events planned for summer 2010, so make sure you don't miss out!

KCI Event: North Korea - Human Face Lecture Series - Health Diplomacy in North Korea

The Korean Center, Inc. (KCI) is proud to present the next installment of its special lecture series entitled North Korea: Human Face. A group of KAPS members will be attending this lecture on Wednesday, May 19th at 6:00 pm at the Korean Center (1362 Post St, San Francisco). There will also be a reception with refreshments at 7:00 pm.

Global health diplomacy: This lecture is framed around the critical issue of “health diplomacy” as a way to engage North Korea, and comprises Part II of the Global Health Diplomacy subseries of the “North Korea: Human Face” program. An emerging field of global policy, international health diplomacy is a cutting-edge field that interfaces between foreign policy, public health, and law and economics.

Dr. Sharon Perry is a senior research scientist from the Division of Infectious Diseases, School of Medicine, Stanford University, and science fellow with the Stanford Freeman-Spogli Institute, Center for International Security & Cooperation. Sharon Perry and her team were recently featured in the New York Times for their cutting-edge humanitarian work in North Korea. In an unprecedented collaboration between U.S. and North Korean tuberculosis experts, Perry has been leading a team of U.S. medical specialists working with doctors from Pyongyang’s Ministry of Public Health to develop the country’s first diagnostic laboratory for drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB).

Dr. Perry’s medical research has focused on the immuno-epidemiology of tuberculosis, for which she is a recipient of an NIH K23 career development award. During 2008, in collaboration with CISAC and APARC, she organized the Bay Area Tuberculosis Consortium to host a delegation of North Korean physicians to visit Bay Area TB programs and discuss opportunities for mutual cooperation. She holds a BA, mcl, in History and Economics from Boston University, and an EdM in Social Policy from Harvard University, and completed her PhD in Epidemiology at UCSD.

The Stanford-led Bay Area Tuberculosis Consortium was organized in 2007 to promote opportunities for professional collaboration with North Korea on mutual interests in TB control. For the past two years, Dr. Sharon Perry has directed the DPRK TB Health Policy Project, which seeks to develop opportunities for academic exchange on tuberculosis control. Dr. Perry will discuss the consortium’s work with the DPRK Ministry of Public Health to develop the country’s first laboratory with capacity to diagnose tuberculosis by culture and drug susceptibility testing. Implications of the project for regional and Pacific Rim TB programs will also be discussed.
