April Kappy Hour

KCI Event: North Korea - Human Face Lecture Series - An Inside Look at the DPRK's Health Care System

The Korean Center, Inc. (KCI) is proud to present the fourth installment of its special lecture series entitled North Korea: Human Face. A group of KAPS members will be attending this lecture on Friday, April 9th at 6:00 pm at the Korean Center (1362 Post St, San Francisco). There will also be a reception with refreshments at 7:00 pm.

This will be a discussion with Dr. Moon Jae Pak, Chairman, US-DPRK Medical Science Exchange Committee (UDMEDEX) & Vice President, Korean American National Coordinating Council (KANCC)

This talk will highlight constructive solutions to humanitarian problems in North Korea through health diplomacy, and discuss how Americans can play a role in this. Dr. Pak will give an assessment of the development and current state of the North Korean medical care system, and examine difficulties it has encountered in the last twenty years. Dr. Pak will also speak on the economy of reunification of the Korean peninsula.

About the Speaker: Dr. Moon Jae Pak serves as the Chairman of the US-DPRK Medical Science Exchange Committee & VP of the Korean American National Coordinating Council. Dr. Pak visits North Korea on an annual basis as part of a medical delegation to the Pyongyang Medical Symposium. The 12th Symposium will be hosted this May. Dr. Pak was also one of a few Korean American physicians invited by the North Korean authority to visit the country in 1995, and helped develop a new hospital in Pyongyang called the Third People’s Hospital. This hospital has served as a model for adapting modern health care practices. Dr. Pak received his MD from Yonsei University College of Medicine, and currently serves on the Board of the Korean-American Medical Association.

About the US-DPRK Medical Science Exchange Committee (UDMEDEX): UDMEDEX has helped promote the health of the North Korean people by bringing technology and modern medical expertise to the DPRK. The Committee also hosts medical exchange delegations to encourage purposeful engagement.

Join KAPS at Kollaboration SF - a Korean and Asian Talent Showcase

Kollaboration (www.kollaborationsf.org) is an annual event and movement produced by young Asian and Pacific Islander (API) professionals and students to promote a strong API presence in entertainment and media. This high-energy shows across the nation provide a unique chance for young API artists to showcase their talents and for the first time will be appearing in San Francisco.

Asian American Theater Company Event: "Macho Bravado"

Asian American Theater Company proudly presents “Macho Bravado,” a play exploring marital combat, self-doubt and discovery of a Korean American soldier. It is written by Alex Park, who received an MFA in creative writing at San Francisco State.

Synopsis: Evan Cho is a Korean American soldier who has just returned from fighting in the Middle East to find a greater battle at home over his love, his identity, and his masculinity. Although Evan could not bring himself to tell his wife Lindsey that he had become sterile during the war, she greets him with wonderful news: she’s pregnant. Confronted with questions of infidelity and self-doubt, both Evan and Lindsey struggle to maintain the macho bravado that defined their relationship before the war. This is a story that goes beyond the post-traumatic stress that a soldier and his wife experience, and ventures deep into their journey to forgive themselves and to forgive each other.
