KOREAN DRUMMING TROUPE LOOKING FOR A NEW HOME
Jamaesori, a Korean women's drum troupe, is looking for a new home. Jamaesori was housed at the Korean Youth Cultural Center, but now with KYCC closing, they are searching for a new home.
Jamaesori ("Sister Sound") is a group of adults of Korean descent who use traditional Korean drumming to support social justice movements. Jamaesori uses Pilbong style Pungmul, a participatory folk art tradition, to coalesce around the expression of communal hopes and to overcome sorrow and hardship. Since being founded in 1991, Jamaesori has taken inspiration from the spirit of Pungmul and contributed to the vitality of our community by participating in numerous events, celebrations and demonstrations. Jamaesori to recognize our culture, to honor our history and to rally in shaping our future. You can learn more at http://jamaesori.wordpress.com/
Art galleries, martial arts dojos, warehouse space, offices that are unused at night, any place that is closed on Mondays … any of these are possibilities.
Here is what Jamaesori is looking for:
Mondays
We need a space for at least two hours on Monday evenings, any time between 6:30-9:30.
BART accessibility
We'd like to be within 4 blocks of a Bart Station. It can be in Oakland, Berkeley or S.F., preferably Oakland.
Size
At least 15 ft x 15 ft.
Storage
A space approximately 4 ft x 4 ft x 6 ft to store our instruments. If there isn't already a closet, then we can get creative.
Our music is welcome
Ideally, we'd be in a building or street that would welcome our joyful noise. We always have fun at practice, so the practice space we're in gets infused with happy energy. At the least, we'll need to be in a space that won't have neighbors that will complain. We have 4-10 drummers at any time.
Rent
We can pay $100 per month or less. We can pay a security deposit.
Anyone who knows of a place or would like to assist is encouraged to contact Amie Kim at msamiekim@gmail. com

MULTICULTURAL WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
Engage Her is hosting their first Multicultural Women's Leadership Conference April 25-26 at a local University or college in the Bay Area. They plan to bring 400+ men & women together to discuss and create solutions to getting more multicultural women into leadership roles. Since multiculturals (minorities) combined now comprise the majority in California and the rest of the nation will look like us by 2042, we need to address the leadership gap. Men continue to dominate the decision making roles in the three key institutions that influence our nation: corporations, government and media. In order to prepare ourselves for the next generation of leaders, we need to put together plans and strategies to "fill the pipeline" with qualified and competent multicultural men and women to assume the mantle of leadership.
Engage Her has national women leaders who have committed to flying out to participate including Gloria Steinem founder of Ms Magazine and Choice USA, Maria Teresa Peterson Executive Director of Votolatino.org, Joan Blades Cofounder of Moveon.org & Momsrising.org, Elmy Bermejo Chairperson of HOPE & Women's Foundation of California, Raye Mitchell founder of I C Hope Foundation & Project GURLS and organizations like The White House Project, NAACP, Momsrising.org, DeAnza College and Laney College who are participating.
Engage her is selecting 24 young college women and working women representing multicultural communities to train and run the conference.
If you are interested in learning more about this conference (tickets go in sale later this month) or helping run the conference, please contact Tameeka Kelley (tkelley.kelley@gmail.com) or visit www.engageher.org
