Did you know? Blood cancer patients (i.e. leukemia or lymphoma), who are in need of a marrow transplant, have a difficult time finding their life saving match because there are not enough people listed on the National Registry. Because matching is dependent on genetics, this process is even more difficult for patients that have a diverse ethnic background. There is a severe shortage in Asian Americans on the National Registry: out of the 7 million donors, only 7% or of Asian descent, making it nearly impossible for an Asian patient to find a match. You can help this cause by registering to be a potential marrow/stem cell donor, or by volunteering this weekend at the Ia-Oe E Ka La Hula Festival. Volunteers will work with the Asian American Donor Program (AADP) to help increase the minority representation on the National Registry by registering more potential marrow/stem cell donors. AADP will be at the festival on Oct. 31 (3-8pm) and Nov, 1 and 2 (10-4) - see below for more details. If you have any questions or are interested in volunteering, contact Glenna at glenna@aadp.org or call 510-568-3700 ext 101. Alameda County Fairgrounds Start: 8:00 pm

We are pleased to announce that our 9th Annual KAPS Career Forum for College Students will be held at UC Berkeley on Saturday, November 8, 2008, hosted by the UC Berkeley Korean American Student Association (KASA). The KAPS Career Forum is designed to provide career guidance and mentorship to Korean American college students in the Bay Area. This is a great opportunity for us to talk to students about the industries in which we work and to provide tips about what employers/graduate schools really want, especially in today's competitive labor market. Any KAPS members in human resources or interested in recruiting smart, motivated college students are encouraged to attend. This is also a great event for KAPS members interested in networking with or hearing from other successful KAPS members in industries like high-tech, Where: UC-Berkeley, Dwinelle Hall (to see a map of the campus, visit http://berkeley.edu/map/maps/large_map.html and look at D3 and 4) If you have any questions about the event, please contact KAPS Public Relations Chair Ann Kim at ann@kaps.org. | ||

Come join the Asian American Donor Program (AADP) as they celebrate their 19th annual fundraiser dinner, Fantasia 2008! AADP is a non profit organization dedicated to saving lives of those with blood cancers (i.e. leukemia or lymphoma) in need of marrow/stem cell transplants. Because matching is dependent on genetics, and with the severe shortage of minority donors on the National Registry, its very hard for a patient with a diverse ethnic background to find a life saving match. Out of the 7 million registered donors, only 0.9% are Korean, while the Asian community, as a whole, only represent 7%. AADP has worked hard to increase the minority representation so that every searching patient has a second chance at life. Come support all the work that AADP does by attending Fantasia 2008 After Dark Mixer (with open bar) featuring an exclusive viewing of the exhibit: Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures from the National Museum, Kabul. Saturday, November 22, 2008 Reception and Private Showing at 6:00 pm Reception and Private Showing: $125* To purchase tickets or for more information, contact Glenna Lee at 510-568-3700 ext 101.
