Call+Response is a first of its kind feature documentary film that reveals the world's 27 million dirtiest secrets: there are more slaves today than ever before in human history. Call+Response goes deep undercover where slavery is thriving from the child brothels of Cambodia to the slave brick kilns of rural India to reveal that in 2007, Slave Traders made more money than Google, Nike and Starbucks combined.

Luminaries on the issue such as Cornel West, Madeleine Albright, Daryl Hannah, Julia Ormond, Ashley Judd, Nicholas Kristof, and many other prominent political and cultural figures offer first hand account of this 21st century trade. Performances from Grammy-winning and critically acclaimed artists including Moby, Natasha Bedingfield, Cold War Kids, Matisyahu, Imogen Heap, Talib Kweli, Five For Fighting, Switchfoot, members of Nickel Creek and Tom Petty's Heartbreakers, Rocco Deluca move this chilling information into inspiration for stopping it.

Besides Obama versus McCain, did you know that there are also many critical state and local issues on the November Ballot?

  • Does it seem like every year you are voting for another school parcel tax or school bond, but not sure how they actually benefit your kid's education?
  • Or that every year we seem to have yet another state budget crisis?
  • Did you know that we have 12 state initiatives this November? And that if approved, they will collectively issue another $15 billionin state bonds?

With the election around the corner, this is your chance to come learn about these issues. Join us for an afternoon of discussions with our panel of experts and speakers. We will discuss K-12 education, the state budget, and the November State Initiatives. All of them are critical issues that directly impact you as the voter. We will provide you with non-partisan analysis, you make the decision.

Did you know?

Blood cancer patients (i.e. leukemia or lymphoma), who are in need of a marrow transplant, have a difficult time finding their life saving match because there are not enough people listed on the National Registry. Because matching is dependent on genetics, this process is even more difficult for patients that have a diverse ethnic background. There is a severe shortage in Asian Americans on the National Registry: out of the 7 million donors, only 7% or of Asian descent, making it nearly impossible for an Asian patient to find a match.

You can help this cause by registering to be a potential marrow/stem cell donor, or by volunteering this weekend at the Ia-Oe E Ka La Hula Festival. Volunteers will work with the Asian American Donor Program (AADP) to help increase the minority representation on the National Registry by registering more potential marrow/stem cell donors.

AADP will be at the festival on Oct. 31 (3-8pm) and Nov, 1 and 2 (10-4) - see below for more details. If you have any questions or are interested in volunteering, contact Glenna at glenna@aadp.org or call 510-568-3700 ext 101.

We are pleased to announce that our 9th Annual KAPS Career Forum for College Students will be held at UC Berkeley on Saturday, November 8, 2008, hosted by the UC Berkeley Korean American Student Association (KASA).

The KAPS Career Forum is designed to provide career guidance and mentorship to Korean American college students in the Bay Area. This is a great opportunity for us to talk to students about the industries in which we work and to provide tips about what employers/graduate schools really want, especially in today's competitive labor market.

Any KAPS members in human resources or interested in recruiting smart, motivated college students are encouraged to attend. This is also a great event for KAPS members interested in networking with or hearing from other successful KAPS members in industries like high-tech,
private equity, law, medicine, and more. Afterward, KAPS members in attendance typically go out for some post-event bonding and festivities.

Where: UC-Berkeley, Dwinelle Hall (to see a map of the campus, visit http://berkeley.edu/map/maps/large_map.html and look at D3 and 4)
When: Saturday, November 8th at 12:30 pm

If you have any questions about the event, please contact KAPS Public Relations Chair Ann Kim at ann@kaps.org.
